Highlights: Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle

Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in Saturday’s lunchtime Premier League kickoff moves Mikel Arteta’s side level on West Ham United in the final UEFA Champions League place.

Bukayo Saka and substitute Gabriel Martinelli scored the goals in a 10-minute spell early in the second half to hand Eddie Howe his first defeat as Magpies’ manager.

The Gunners had been the better side for much of the game, with the visitors rarely threatening, and should have been ahead just before half-time but for captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang somehow managing to hit the outside of the post from a yard out.

Saka produced a fine strike to give Arsenal the lead 10 minutes into the second-half before Martinelli produced a sublime chipped volley to double their lead.

Callum Wilson had a good shout for a penalty for Newcastle at 0-1 but VAR barely had a look. Defeat leaves the richest club in the world winless in their first 13 games of the 2021-22 Premier League season. Only Derby County in 2000-01 have avoided relegation after starting a campaign with such a winless streak.
